The main aims of the training course was to get an overview of conflicts through lectures and sharing experience; to understand the complexity of conflicts including their psychological aspects; to learn about ways to transform conflict; and to get practical training in conflict transformation.
EYCE has chosen Serbia, because it is a country, which history was influenced by conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and after. Recently there has been established several youth organisations and NGOs that are working on reconciliation and building bridges between cultures, nations. They can stand as an example how a conflict can be overcome, how people with diverse culture, religion, language etc. can live in peace and respect next to each other. Transforming conflict has had an important issue in this country and many civil and governmental initiatives have aimed to work on it. In this training course EYCE co-operated with the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organisation (EHO) in Novi Sad, which has taken an active role in conflict transformation in the area. Its members come from five ethnic groups and four Christian denominations.
The training course was based on an active role of all participants. It enabled the participants to learn about the mentioned issue with heads, hands and hearts. The working methods used therefore varied from workshops where practical skills were used and improved to lectures and small group discussions and to other creative means such as short dramas and role games.
Programme elements included critical analysis of the roots and context of the conflict; analysis of the need for acting in conflict and ways how to transform conflict; introduction to human rights, humanitarian law and Christians responsibility in conflicts, introduction to different theories about conflict and conflict management, tools fro peace makers.
Participants developed projects how to prevent conflicts or how to contribute conflict transformation or acting as peace makers in their own respective context. These projects will be followed up by participants and EYCE.
One important aspect was the social part of the event, which helped everyone in intercultural learning and celebrating our diversities: International Banquet, European Cultural Evening and a Serbian Surprise evening were our Serbian friends tough us songs and dances from that area. |
