With Christians across Europe CEC remembers Berlin, 9 November 1989
“With Christians across Europe, CEC rejoices at the memory of the events in Berlin of November 9, 1989. The scenes of joy which followed the opening of the Berlin Wall expressed a joy which was felt across Europe as walls which had separated individuals from individuals, families from families, nations from nations, began to break open.”
The Venerable Colin Williams, the General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches, has written a letter today to Bishop Margot Kässmann, Ratsvorsitzende of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 2009.

In the letter, General Secretary Williams comments on the role that the Churches played in enabling the events of that historic day: â₏œWhat of course must not be forgotten is the role which the Churches played in enabling the events of November 9 to take place. It was the patient, determined, brave prayer and witness of Christians, not least in the GDR, for peace, justice and the integrity of creation, even when faced with so many obstacles and challenges, which was a clear focus for the movement which led up to the events of November 9, 1989.â₏¶

He goes on to note that the first freely elected government of the GDR, established after the fall of Communism, donated a section of the Wall to CEC in thanksgiving for the part CEC played in supporting the churches of Eastern Europe as a whole. In the letter, General Secretary Williams states that today that section of the Wall still stands in the garden at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva.

Archdeacon Williams goes on to state that: â₏œThe quest for justice, peace and the integrity of creation goes on. May the memory of that tremendous night in Berlin twenty years ago inspire Churches throughout Europe to strengthen their witness anew. â₏œ
